Sixty apps in the Google Play Store have been contaminated with the malicious malware Goldoson. Discovered was from the security company McAfee. In a blog post, the mobile research team informs that these apps have been downloaded 100 million times via Google’s Play Store and South Korea’s ONE Store.

Among the ten most popular apps infected with the malware are the following:

L.POINT with L.PAY
Swipe Brick Breaker
Money Manager Expense & Budget
GOM Player
LIVE Score
Pikicast
Compass 9
GOM Audio – Music, Sync lyrics
LOTTE WORLD Magicpass
Bounce Brick Breaker
Data and GPS locations

Goldoson got into the apps via a third-party library. Hackers had integrated it into the apps. If developers subsequently access the application, they unwittingly integrate the malware into their app.

Once Goldoson is on the Android smartphone, it can collect data and track down the GPS locations of users. Mac data could also be transmitted via the devices connected to the Android phone via Bluetooth and WLAN. This data could be used to identify individual persons.

The malware could also click on ads in the background and thus generate profits for the hackers. This could be expensive for smartphone owners.

Update or delete
Once the app is installed, it communicates with the remote server. The remote server then determines how often Goldoson should click on ads or steal data. The data is subsequently transmitted every two days.

McAfee has already informed Google and the app developers. All affected apps have either been updated or banned from the Play Store. Android users should install available updates immediately. If an app is no longer in the Play Store, it should be deleted immediately.
